This region is clearly dominated by the country's capital, Lisbon. This fascinating city kept its charm through the centuries under the domination of moors, phoenicians and spaniards. It survived a devastating eathquake in 1755 and was remarkably rebuilt. As you stroll around, you'll find wide esplanades paved with black and white mosaics, open squares where you can buy freshly roasted chestnuts in paper cones, mazes of cobbled alleys, and steeply winding streets along which quaint trams whirr. Cascais is a well known resort famous for its sandy beaches and vibrant atmosphere. Estoril grew from a small spa village into an elegant prosperous resort where exiled european royalty settled. Sintra is a beautiful hilltown dotted with romantic gardens and historic palaces surrounded by magical wooded hills. Byron praised it as a glorious Eden. Crossing the river visitors can spend a relaxing time on the fine golf courses and beaches of Tróia or exploring the tiny, unhurried fishing village of Sesimbra.
