Hotel do Sado Business & Nature is a four star hotel on the edge of Setubal, which enjoys from breathtaking views over the marina and the city. This has been an important fishing port since the first century. After the Moorish invasions in the fourth century, it declined and the port silted up.
The estuary was one of the most important centres for the salting of fish with the salt being obtained from the sea by evaporating it in shallow areas along the estuary.
More recently the estuary has been converted into 'paddy fields' for the growing of rice, Portugal being the biggest producer in Europe.
The town really developed during the Age of Discoveries when King Afonso V sailed from the port of Setubal in 1458 for Morocco, where he conquered Alcacer Ceguer.
Setubal later became one of the country's most important commercial and industrial centres in the 19th century and was elevated to a city in 1860.
The mud flats of the Sado Estuary are the natural habitat to numerous land and marine bird species and some molluscs. Within the area are otters, badgers, foxes, white storks, eagles and herons.
The Estuary has been the home to several civilisations in the past, with the ruins including Phoenician houses.
The Fortress of São Filipe on the top of a hill overlooking the city. From there, there is a magnificent view of the river and the Troia peninsula opposite. This sandy spit at the entrance ot the Sado river is served by a car ferry and has long sandy beaches.
To the west is the natural park of Arrabida which has small sandy south facing coves along the coastline. The area has many golf courses within a short drive.
Hotel do Sado is within walking distance from the town centre from where there are transport services to Lisbon about 45 kilometres distant.
