This traditional inn is in Penedono, an old fortified village with ancient houses and one of the best preserved villages of Portugal.
Located between mediavel Douro and the wine growing fields of Cister, the Hotel is set in a peaceful location in the border of the Beira Alta and Alto Douro region.
On rocks in the middle of this village stands Penedono castle that was built during the ninth century.
From the walls there are splendid views of the surrounding countryside.
It is mentioned in the medieval tale of a knight known as o Magrico ("Lean One"), who went to England with eleven other knights to woo twelve noble English ladies, who found themselves without knights. To show off their manhood, these knights fought a joust to show their suitability for marriage.
This small hotel is near the castle and was formerly the offices of the village council who are the landlords.
