The Monsaraz Inn is located in a typical Alentejo village. As it has remained unaffected by modern life, it is seeking the protection from development by being granted World Heritage Site status by Unesco.
The rural way of life has stayed much the same for centuries and generations of farmers have gone about their daily lives almost untouched by the busy world around them.
Located 31 miles east of Evora and near the Spanish border, the tiny medieval walled town of Monsaraz with it's narrow cobbled lanes is one of the most atmospheric places in the Alentejo as it still retains much of it's medieval charm.
The town was handed over to the Knights Templar before Dom Dinis added the castle and fortified walls in the 14th century.
From these walls you can gaze east over the Guadiana river to neighbouring Spain, or west across the great plains of the Alentejo.
Estalagem de Monsaraz is a very small inn, at the entrance to the village and near the castle, that has comfortable accommodation in superb surroundings.
The hotel has eight comfortable rooms and four suites.
All the rooms have a private bath room, hair dryer, direct dial telephone, cable TV, air conditioning and mini bar. One of the rooms have been special fittings for the disabled.
There is a small restaurant serving traditional Portuguese cuisine and also a bar.
From the swimming pool area there are stunning views over the surrounding landscape.
Several activities can be arranged for guests such as canoeing, horse riding, ballooning or walking. Previous booking is required.
You will also have the opportunity to see the marvellous local craftsmanship such as pottery.
Lisbon International airport is approximately 180 kilometres away.
